As it Reads in the April Edition of the Men's Journal Magazine How to Win A Bar Bet If you want to win admiration, drinks, or even cold, hard cash, there's no better ploy than a trick pool shot. I call this one "Full Tilt" because it has tremendous visual appeal, like a pinball game. When you set it up, people won't believe you can make it, and when you do, they'll bet you can't make it again. With practice, even an average player can pull it off. Step 1 The Set Up: Position the cue and six balls as shown in the diagram. Ball 1 should sit directly in front of the side pocket, with ball 2 "frozen" next to it so that there's no space between them. The middle of both balls should line up with corner pocket A. Position balls 3, 4, and 5 as close to the respective pocket edges as possible. Step 2 The Props: Freeze the butt end of another cue stick against ball 3 and the shaft to ball 4. Freeze a rack to ball 5 as shown, slightly angled off the rail. Lastly, lay an empty bottle flat on the table, lined up with pocket A, with ball 6 frozen to the top. Ball 2 will drop in pocket A first, so ball 6 needs to be positioned just outside its path. Setting up the props is half your wager-raising act. People will wonder what the heck you're doing, especially if you pretend to use the bottle on a whim. Step 3 The Shot: Shoot the cue with a medium-hard stroke and a little bit of right hand low English, hitting ball 1 right of center. (If you can't master the spin, postion the cue slightly farther to the left) Now watch as the cue knocks ball 1 into the side pocket; travels down the prop stick into the rack, dropping balls 3,4, and 5; and finally nudges the bottle, dropping ball 6 just after ball 2 has also dropped into pocket A. Try to look incredulous as you scoop up your winnings. |
